Honeycomb Stitch-Along / Materials Lists

This post is part of the Honeycomb Stitch-Along. For more information, make sure to check out the complete schedule here.

Materials List

Here's the complete list of all the fabric cuts, thread, notions, and tools you will need to finish your project. I will be including directions throughout the stitch-along for making each the 18", 20", and 24" square versions of this design. Pick whichever size (and pillow form) you prefer and make sure to note any special call-outs in the lists below related to your chosen pillow size. Generally though the  fabric requirements for each size don't vary that much.

In the fabric and embroidery thread section I have also included three different variations on the materials list to hopefully meet everyone's needs.
  1. If you are planning to use your own selection of fabric and thread, click General Fabric/ Thread Requirements below to see a list of fabric cuts and basic thread colors you'll want to have. You can also use the provided blank design/ coloring pages to "try-out" different color and pattern arrangements and to help stay organized during the stitch-along. : )
  2. If you are planning to use the same fabric and thread options in the samples shown below, click on either the warm or the cool colors palette. Here you will find a list of specific fabrics from the Honey, Honey collection by Kate Spain that you will need to complete your project. I have also included a list of the coordinating thread colors that are shown in each sample.
If you have any questions about the fabrics needed, finding alternatives to any of the notions listed, or any other questions about the materials list; feel free to leave me comment below or e-mail me directly. I have tried to include everything that I think we'll need to complete the project, but there may be other tools or notions that you will want to add for yourself.

  • Embroidery needle (sharp with long eye) and hoop
  • Machine piecing and quilting thread
  • Walking foot or free-motion quilting foot
  • Printer and heavier copy paper or coverstock (to make hexie templates) *See Section Below*
  • Regular tracing paper or supplies for your favorite embroidery transfer method (I will talk more about this in detail during the embroidery tutorial)

Hexie Sizes by Pillow Size (With Printable Templates):

18" Pillow

20" Pillow

24" Pillow

NOTE: You may choose to print your hexies using the provided templates above, or you may chose to buy pre-made paper-pieces in the sizes required for the pillow size you are making. Whichever you prefer is fine. : )

If you do print your hexie templates, make sure to set the scaling on your printer to 100% or "none" to keep true-to-size. It doesn't hurt to measure one side of the hexie after printing to ensure everything is correctly scaled.

Finally, if you are interested in purchasing a complete kit of fabric, embroidery thread, and interfacing in either the warm or cool palette; Sew Lux Fabrics has put together some great coordinating kits that will have all of this included (just add a few extra notions and tools).

Sew Lux had also supplied me with my kit (Thank You!) so everything you see me using in terms of fabric, thread, and interfacing will be what's included in yours as well. These kits will be on sale for 10% off through this Friday, February 15th in case you're planning to pick one up.

The Knotted Thread also has coordinating fabric bundles available in both the warm and cool color palettes for those interested in working with fat eighths instead of charms. These bundles are customizable as well in case you'd like to mix and match a bit from the Honey, Honey collection.

You can also find the complete Honey, Honey collection at The Intrepid Thread along with a nice selection of solids. You can also get 10% off your entire order with the code SWEETHEART through February 13th.

Pink Chalk Fabrics is carrying many of the prints in this collection and also has a nice selection of embroidery/ hand-stitching supplies available as well as a great selection of solids.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We'll meet back up again on Friday, February 22nd for the cutting instructions. In the meantime, feel free to contact me with any questions you may have as you put together your individual kit. See you then!

  1. I am excited about this pillow! My daughter's name is Bea, so how could I pass this by?

  2. I just took my first beekeeping class - I think I need to start putting my pillow kit together!

  3. I know I'm jumping way ahead but where do the bees come from? Are they made from solid fabric and appliqued on the fabric?

    1. The bees are embroidered in a black outline with yellow and white colored highlights if that helps. They'll be stitched directly on the central square of fabric. I hope this helps!

  4. I was wondering about the bees also. I was thinking of making this pillow in the colors for the quilt I am making for my guest room. I was debating placing something else where the bees are--if they are embroidered onto the pillow.

    1. The bees are embroidered, but feel free to change the design to fit whatever you like!

  5. I am up for this, although I will be making mine into a mini quilt. Not a pillow person. Is the interfacing needed if I do this? I'm trying to figure out its purpose..

    1. You're right that the bulk of the interfacing is for the backing of the pillow, but you'll probably still want to have at least enough to interface the front, most-central square (to stabilize for embroidery). For the largest 24" size, you'd need a 16.5" x 16.5" piece or roughly a half-yard of 20" wide SF101.

  7. How long will the fabric be on sale at Sew Lux? I am trying to decide whether or not to stash dive or buy the gorgeous bundle. Thanks!

  8. you know, I JUST put together my first hexie not too long ago ( well it was my second...I was not happy with the first at all, lol : )

    I have bookmarked this! :)

  9. I've not done much hand sewing at all so far, this is a great way for me to jump in at the deep end and learn! I'll have to raid my fabric drawers and see if I have anything that would work or if I will have the hardship of buying fabric ;)

  10. I was just checking out the list again---how much white do we need (or whatever color) for the frame part where the stitched lines are? (Does this make sense?)
